This book is part of a set of two books. The other one is the version written for the yayas (nannies), which I will also review soon. So, watch out for that.
I was really interested in this set of books when I first heard of them because I’ve hired several yayas over the years. I’ve had the privilege of finding really good ones but like other people I know, I’ve also had my share of yaya horror stories. Truth be told, we decided we no longer wanted to hire one three years ago and have been surviving (and thriving) so far. But I know that there are families out there who still need and want to hire yayas and so I wanted to help get the word out about this set of books.
This book in particular was written in English for the employers or parents. Specifically, it’s meant for employers all over the world who employ Filipino nannies. I was expecting it to contain only tips on how to handle yayas but it’s actually more than that. It’s also a parenting book divided into 4 chapters, namely,
Chapter 1: Qualities of an Excellent Yaya
Chapter 2: Developmental Needs of Children (For 0 – 5 years old)
Chapter 3: Discipline
Chapter 4: Good Nutrition
I like that the book included the topics above because these are things that we need to consider as parents. Aside from that, these are the topics that we need to also discuss with our yayas. Our yayas are the people who we entrust our kids with. Therefore, they should embody the values we hold dear as well. They should be trained to take care of our kids the way we want them to.
The book is very relatable and easy to read at only 53 pages long. Each subsection also discusses Pointers For Yayas. These are specific guidelines of things they can do related to the topic. They contain practical tips that maybe some parents might overlook when training their yayas. It’s nice to be reminded of certain things so that we can really help our yayas be the best that they could be.
I also love the graphics. They’re only black and white so it doesn’t distract too much from your reading. Actually, there are some really helpful charts too, such as the Physical Activity Chart for Kids and The Filipino Plate, which I both love. It makes reading more fun.
While there are more comprehensive parenting books out there, I think that overall this one is good to have in your home because it really focuses on things that should matter most to parents when it comes to hiring and training their yayas. Busy parents can easily read this book during breaks from work or home duties.
I love that the author was able to compile all her learnings and teachings from her Yaya Enrichment Classes into the book. It’s really very informative and helpful for all households with yayas. It’s also very affordable too at only P 300. It’s a great book to give as a gift for new parents or parents who are new to hiring nannies.
